The reason we chose the iFi ZEN Blue V2 is that it sounds amazing right out of the box, will connect to virtually anything with a Bluetooth signal, and features one of the better DACs based on the ESS chipset. Yes, we’re including a Bluetooth option, because truth be told this is the perfect gateway device for allowing the kids (or grandkids) of the digital age a chance to take the wheel of any major (or minor) hi-fi system. The Schiit Modi 3+ DAC has plenty of connectivity options, including optical and coax, and most notably for 2021, Schiit’s proprietary Unison USB™ technology. Have a computer with USB capability? There should be no difference.Welcome to the Best Digital Players section of the Part-Time Audiophile Buyers Guide for 2022. Rip to WAV or FLAC (or some other lossless codec) in secure mode with something like EAC and compare it to direct off the drive. If you're not using the second 2 or 4 wire audio cable, you're not going to get any improvement on the "transport" side. This is the mode that reads the audio as data and not audio (in the "old" days, audio was read off CDs as audio like a normal CD player and there possibly transport issues might come into play, but this setup required a second audio cable from the drive to the PC).
You're already using Foobar, which I think probably has a DAE/Secure audio playback mode.

The only things that matter, SQ wise in a PC are the DAC and the player. On a PC you don't have those issues, you're doing a digital, data transfer that's read of the CD (and re-read if an error is detected) buffered, and eventually passed on to the DAC. In reality data/programs are far less forgiving to errors than audio is, because audio CDs are designed to be played in real time on players with little or no buffering so they're made in a way to allow them to mask errors.

Think of it this way, you can read a program off a CD perfectly time after time, if any bit is screwed up on your Microsoft Office install CD, the program won't work at all. Right, I'm not even going to get into what the standalones think to justify their marketing but the data transfer inside a PC is all asynchronous and buffered with error correction.
